The Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act cleared the Tennessee House of Representatives on Monday, April 6, and now moves to the Tennessee Senate for approval.

The bill (HB1484/SB1467) passed the House 74-21, with amendments, and now heads back to the Senate for further action. If state senators agree with any amendments adopted by the House, they can vote to accept the new version and enroll it for approval by Gov. Bill Lee.

If adopted as law, the act would require local prosecutors to report to the state any plea deals, reduction in charges, or dismissals in felony cases tied to the Memphis Safe Task Force.

Any changes must be submitted to state leadership — the Tennessee attorney general, the speaker of the Tennessee Senate and the speaker of the Tennessee House — the district attorneys general conference and the U.S. attorney with jurisdiction in the region "within 24 hours," according to state documents.

The Tennessee House has passed a bill requiring the Shelby County district attorney to notify state and federal officials about certain arrests made in the county.

The bill is called the Memphis Safe Task Force Accountability Act, and it requires the D.A. to give details about cases that lead to a plea agreement, a reduced charge, or a dismissal.
